Opening on Friday February 20th, eight emerging Irish designers will have their collections exhibited as part of the International Fashion Showcase during London Fashion Week. Curated by Gemma A. Williams, the Irish exhibition, In the Fold, is an immersive and experiential installation exploring how young Irish graduates use fashion as a response to their environment and revealing how we construct a cultural identity. In The Fold is presented at IFS 2015 by ID2015 in collaboration with fashion exhibition partner Kildare Village, Ireland’s luxury shopping outlet destination.
Over the coming week, we'll be profiling each of the eight designers and curator Gemma A. Williams, starting with Dublin-based Caoimhe MacNeice.
Graduating from the National College of Art & Design in 2014 with a BA in Fashion Design, the starting point of her design dialogue is construction, backed up by a love of pattern cutting and the technicalities of design. With a strong focus on material experimentation, garments are reduced to simple geometric shapes allowing construction to inform the line of a garment. This fluidity in technique allows a silhouette to develop, as opposed to rigidly recreating a design first captured on paper.
Why did you choose to pursue a career in fashion?
I think fashion is actually something I fell into. I had always loved clothes but I never really saw myself working in that industry. It wasn't until I was in my first year in NCAD, we did a little area experience in the fashion department, and I knew this was exactly what I wanted to be doing. I love the technical side to it and how it's so hands on, every collection for me begins with a construction idea that I want to explore
What advice would you have for someone interested in getting into fashion design?
What drives you, as a designer?
A need to push myself out of my comfort zone and challenge myself, to take a risk.
Who or what is your greatest inspiration?
Miuccia Prada, her collections are always daring and unlike any other label. I love how she seems to have a sense of humor with her designs too.
What do you think are the most stylish trends for SS15?
I love the colour turquoise for SS15.
