With only five days to go until In the Fold at the International Fashion Showcase opens on February 20th, we take a closer look at the work of menswear designer Rory Parnell-Mooney

Galway-born Rory Parnell-Mooney completed a masters degree in menswear at Central Saint Martins, showing his graduate collection to great industry acclaim. From his London base, he was quickly selected by Fashion East for their incubator platform MAN and debuted at London Collections: Mens A/W in January 2015. Finding inspiration in the empirical, he centers his collections on themes or objects which resonate personally, and cites Ireland as an endlessly inspiring country. Using a stark colour palette of muted shades, his sharp tailoring combines modern finishing techniques with traditional fabrics like wools and cotton poplins. His love of clean and minimal lines produces garments that are reduced and restrained.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in fashion?

I just kind of fell into it - I moved to London when I was 18 to study fashion and it all just went from there. I suppose I'm still pursuing it because I never got bored of it - I still love making and designing clothes.

What advice would you have for someone interested in getting into fashion design?

Work hard, never look side to side, listen to the advice of people you respect - aim really high.

What drives you, as a designer?

The urge to make clothes that are better than the last clothes I made.

Who or what is your greatest inspiration?

So many different things inspire me - fabric and cloth, photographs, music, art and exhibitions it’s really a massive wide range of things coming together.

What do you think are the most stylish trends for SS15?

Zen: big loose shapes – wide legs and sleeves, clothes that create space around the body.
