Geared towards class groups, the Design It workshop and exhibition at The Ark in Dublin's city centre is a great opportunity to introduce school children to the process of design, illustrating how designers take ideas and make them realities.
The exhibition, Design It, is the result of a challenge given to Irish designers to create new products for children, taking inspiration from iconic children's toys, furniture and textiles. Design It recreates each designer's individual studio, offering a glimpse of their working practices via their sketches, photographs and working prototypes to reveal the process of creation.
Classes will be brought on a guided tour of the exhibition where they will get an insight into different design processes. The materials and tools used in the making of the products are also displayed, so students can learn about different approaches to materials. Throughout the tour, classes will be encouraged to identify and discuss what they consider the most important design elements of individual pieces, and to give their feedback and suggestions on how the prototype could be developed.
Following the tour, there is a creative workshop with artist Jo May on designing and making a printed fabric pattern, drawing on inspiration from the printed designs featured in the exhibition.
